Notice Regarding Brush Pick Up
The truck that is used to pull the chipper for brush pick up is in the shop with no estimated date for return. At this time, we will not be able to do brush pick up for September. In order to provide brush servicing for our residents, on Monday, September 8th thru Wednesday, September 10th, the chipper will be manned at the Borough Garage site, off lower Prince Street between the hours of 8:00AM-12:00PM, with additional hours on Wednesday, September 10th from 3:00PM-7:00PM.
The Borough will accept ONLY brush that can be run through the wood chipper, such as branches, sticks and small limbs. Please note vegetation (weeds, garden debris, grass clippings, etc. )will not be accepted as it will damage the chipper.
Brush may only be dropped off during the scheduled hours.
On Thursday, September 11th, the resulting mulch will be available for resident's usage.

Notice Road Work
NOTICE: ROAD WORK UPDATE. The roadwork scheduled to begin today, Monday, September 15, 2025 will start on Strawbridge Road. After Strawbridge Road is completed, other roads will follow.
Road work will begin Monday, September 15, 2025 on the below roads:
- Brickyard Ave - from Queen Street to Duke Street, and Duke Street to West Way
- Wheatley Ave - from Priestley Avenue to Water Street
- Wallace Street - from Priestley Avenue to Water Street
- Susquehanna Road - from Empress Tree Lane to Buchanan Avenue
- Strawbridge Road - from Fifth Street to Horizon Avenue
Work will begin with Brickyard Ave and when the work is completed in that area it will continue onto the next road. Milling and paving will be done on the roads, and driving will not be allowed while this is being completed, as the road is going to be milled down 5-inches from the surface. Once the base has been completed, driving will be allowed until paving begins.
We ask for your cooperation during this project. We understand that it is going to be inconvenient; however, the crew will be working to complete the project quickly.

As a courtesy to residents ONLY within the Borough Limits of Northumberland, the Borough Street Department provides brush collection service.
Brush will be picked up the 2nd full week of each month on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday from April through October and after severe storms. Pick up days correspond with the No Parking ordinance.
Please follow the guidelines below. Failure to comply will result in your brush NOT being accepted for pickup. Please call the Borough Office at 570-473-3414 with any questions.
Routine Monthly Brush Pickup
Brush Must:
- Be able to run through the wood chipper
- Be placed curbside no sooner than the weekend before, or later than 7:00 AM on the pickup day (Wednesday).
- Be less than 4 feet long, no longer than 4 inches diameter; stacked neatly with butts all on one end.
- Originate from resident’s property ONLY.
- Weeds, sticks and twigs may be placed in an orderly pile or in an unlined MARKED can. Can should be labeled "BRUSH" in white.
- Duke Street brush must be placed on the corners.
Brush Must NOT:
- Be bagged. It will NOT be picked-up if it is in plastic bags.
- Include: stumps, vines, grass clippings, sod, thorns, briars, poison, roots or root balls.
- Be located where it restricts drainage such as in a gutter line or covering an inlet grate.
- Be located where it impedes vehicular and or walking traffic in the street or sidewalk.
- Include trash, nails, building materials, dirt or rocks.
- Be tied with string, twine, wire or any other material.
- Be left by a commercial tree removal or trimming company. If cut by one of these companies, it should remove it as part of their contract with the resident.
- Plants with PURPLE BERRIES will not be picked up. They stain everything.
*GRASS CLIPPINGS: Experts in lawn care recommend that clippings be left on the lawn to absorb back into the soil or composted with other natural yard waste. They will NOT pick up any grass clippings.
As of August 2025, bagged yard waste and leaves will no
longer be picked up.
The amount of time spent at any one residence should not exceed 2 minutes. In that amount of time, the street department should be able to empty several cans or pick up a bundle of limbs. If you have a large amount of brush contact the Borough Office to make arrangements for pick-up.

Scam Notice from the Police Department
It has come to our attention that some residents are receiving text messages from a number claiming to be the Pennsylvania Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). The text message tells you that you have an outstanding traffic ticket and lists potential penalties if you do not pay the ticket. These text messages are not legitimate; you should block the phone number and delete the message. Pennsylvania government entities will not reach out to you via text message.

Video Surveillance at the Playground
As you may know, a new surveillance system has been installed at the
Second Street Playground. Any acts of vandalism and/or criminal activity
will be investigated and perpetrator(s) will be charged.

REMINDER:
Grass clippings on the road are a Quality of Life Ordinance violation.
Grass clippings are dangerous to motorcycle riders and cyclists and they
clog storm drains. You will get a ticket for a Quality of Life
violation if grass clippings are in the road at your property. If you
have a landscaping company mowing your lawn for you, the property owner
will be receiving the ticket. For more information, please reference
Chapter 42 of the Borough of Northumberland Code Book.
